Keabo Entle hosted their second Back To School Community initiative and we had the pleasure of supporting them. Together we handed over 100 school shoes and 100 school bags to learners in the Vosloorus and Katlehong areas. Thabang Mokoena, founder and Chairperson, spoke very openly about understanding the impact that having a good pair of school shoes and a school bag has on the confidence of a young mind.

Usizo, our Macsteel Enterprise and Supplier Development Program, promotes active participation with immediate benefit to customers in order to create shared, sustainable value. Being a part of the Usizo program offers customers opportunities to receive financial and non-financial support such as business mentorship and industry-related transfer of skill. During April, our Macsteel Trading Durban branch hosted a Novice Forklift Training for two valued Usizo customers. The 5 day training was comprised of 6 modules after which the attendees may obtain an NQF level 3 CREDITS 7 (TETA Accredited Certificate). Congratulations to ACD Industrial Supplies CC’s Caderyn Naidoo and Ashyn Hiralal as well as Rich Steel trading (Pty) Ltd.’s Ntando Hadebe and Sithembiso Sikhumbuzo Mathenjwa on obtaining the accreditation. We hope this intervention goes a long way towards developing their industry expertise.

Substance abuse is a crisis that affects many communities and tears apart families. Organizations such as Silkworth Recovery Centre have thus created an environment to help rehabilitate those affected and their community at large. The ongoing partnership between Macsteel and Silkworth Recovery Centre has allowed for the program to reach over 30 000 beneficiaries. For the year 2020, Macsteel has availed R200 000.00 to the center to fund their Kemoja program that caters for 17 000 beneficiaries. With this funding, the program can afford to invest in transportation, stationary, marketing and coordinator requisites. Sadly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability for us and the center to connect with the community at large has been affected. As a result, the envisaged programs have been delayed. Fortunately, however, Macsteel has also created a link partnership between the Silkworth Recovery Center and the Department of Education and Social Development that has assisted the center to launch the program in schools and establish monitoring and evaluation systems to track progress. As Macsteel, we look forward to further cultivating this relationship in the foreseeable future.
